Taliska Music
Добавлен 12 июл 2012
Taliska captivates audiences weaving Celtic musical magic through soaring songs and airs, then roaring enthusiastically to life with their sprightly, foot-tapping jigs and reels! Combining stunning fiddle playing, the refined and inspiring sounds of the pipes, stirring vocals and harmonies, beautiful harp & driven guitar playing, and melodiously wicked cello.
Memories of Marcus
Ten years since Taliska's first gig, we fondly remember our dear friend and fellow band member Marcus de Rijk (11 Nov 1968 - 13 Jun 2020), the fun times and great music we shared - from the first Taliska gig to the last.

Recorded at the Arts Space in Wodonga, Taliska performs the classic lament "Hector the Hero", written by Scottish composer and fiddler James Scott Skinner in 1903. Skinner wrote the gorgeous tune as a tribute to Major-General Hector MacDonald, a distinguished Scottish general around the turn of the century. MacDonald, a friend of Skinner's, had not long before committed suicide following accusa...

That's a lovely arrrangement! Thank you! Here's a fiddle or flute arrangement if anyone would like sheet music or a backing track for this lovely tune: musescore.com/user/643986/scores/5517663 "Hector the Hero" is a popular fiddle tune, a classic lament composed by the great Scottish composer James Scott Skinner in 1903. It laments the death by coerced suicide of Sir Hector ("Fighting Mac") MacDonald, a popular war hero in Scotland and England, who had been the Commander-in-Chief of British forces in Ceylon. MacDonald was a brilliant military strategist, an accomplished commander, and a polymath -- he spoke Hindustani, Urdu, Pushtu, Arabic, French, and English as well as his native Gaelic. At the time of his death he was the most popular and widely known war hero in Brittain, having been knighted for his service in the Second Boer War. MacDonald committed suicide in 1903 instead of facing a court martial following accusations of homosexual activity with the local Sinhalese. The scandal reaffirmed his heroic status among his native Scots, who understood that a similar scandal involving any of the aristocratic English officers would have been hushed up. They understood too that MacDonald was facing charges not so much for his perceived crime, but because as a Scot he had always been an outsider in the British military. Whatever the merit of charges of homosexuality, they were brought by a jealous British officer corps angered by MacDonald's real crime, that of being a low-born Scott who had risin through the ranks on merit alone, and who treated the local Sinhalese as equals. His funeral in Edinburgh was attended by 30,000 countrymen. Immediately after, the British government destroyed all records of the case against him, declared that there had been no basis for the charges, and declared him a glorious and unparalleled hero. See the Wikipedia article for a short biography of this amazing hero of Scotland.
There is another beautiful violin version of this by the Irish Violinist Rhoda Barfoot, also on RUclips at ruclips.net/video/5Cj8us2Lzvc/видео.html
I had this tune in my head when paddling in my seakayak under the very high Cliff of Skye island a couple of years ago ...unforgottable .. This is my favorite version. Thé pipes , thé speed , thé key of A and few ornementations but at thé wright place .. And dont worry ... you will have to drink again ( may be soon) to the health of the Irish..😀 Greetings from Normandie and thanks a million for sharing ..
This video has me in tears for a few reasons...Firstly - as a member of the Cape Town Highlanders Regiment (who claim their heritage back to the Gordon Highlanders) to know that such a historic officer and gentleman led to the inception of the regiment I am proud to serve under....Secondly - as a proud and open member of the LGBTQ+ community in South Africa; to know that one of our regiments "Founders" saw no other way out of such a vicious scandal other than to take "The Gentleman's Way Out" on March 25 1903 - could only be seen as a proud piece of our history
My Mother Dawn Ritchie ran the Admin section of Cape Town Highlanders for several years during the seventies and Eighties . She then transferred to Cape Field Artillery. I currently live in the USA.
Sorry, Hector MacDonald was NOT gay. It was viscous rumor spread by the Genteel officer class who despised a Scot rising through the ranks to become their equals. Like everything else today people try to put their political and social cause spin on everything.. This officer was a victim of the same petty jealousies and and arrogant elitism many Scots and Irish serving in the UK Military had to live with in those days. Dont take liberty to malign the man's legacy to further your cause.
@@highlandspiper8838 Except it was actually likely both considering that the rumour existed years previously and his behaviour was the subject of discussion among the high command. It's probably also true that he would have been able to dodge the scandal if he was born with a silver spoon.
awesome music ...
Nicely played but why dedicate it to the Irish?
Ireland had just voted to approve same-sex marriage.
But why dedicate Hector the Hero to the Irish ? He was Scottish.
Because it was written by Scott Skinner for his friend, Hector MacDonald, a Scottish general, whom after being outed for being gay, committed suicide.
Hector MacDonald was not gay. It was a rumor spread bu jealous officers because he had came up through the ranks as a true soldier should. Not born with a silver spoon in his mouth like most of them were at that time.
